This week I moved twelve hours across the country, and all that time in the car got me thinking about how much I wish we had planned out our road trip snacks a little better. No worries though, I get to make the trip a second time next week to bring my car and my dog to our new home. Here’s how I’m planning to level up my road trip snacking game for round two of the move.
Hydration Helpers: Whether it’s a few hours in the car or a multi-day trip, it’s easy to fall behind on your fluid intake, especially if you’re avoiding water because you have to pee every couple hours. Easy to pack fruits and vegetables like carrots, apples, and cucumber slices have a high water content which can help you stay hydrated when you’re not drinking as much water. They’re also full of fiber, which will help you feel fuller longer.
Fresh Foods: One of the biggest regrets I had on this past trip was when I was looking through the gas station selection of overpriced meats and cheese packages. Next trip, I’ll be packing a lunchbox with some pre-cut cheese, jerky sticks or pepperoni and crackers. There’s nothing better than some road trip charcuterie.
Crunchy Snacks: After hours of driving through the country, I always feel like picking up something to snack on, just to ease my boredom. The key to not overdoing it on these boredom snacks is picking pre-portioned bags (or creating snack-sized bags yourself ahead of time). Whether it’s fruits and vegetables or a chip, having something to hit those cravings is key for me.
Sweet Treats: I have a sweet tooth and if I don’t plan some sort of sweet treat ahead of time, I will be grabbing a king sized candy bar in a gas station along the way, so I love packing some dark chocolate or peanut butter cups to anticipate those sweet cravings and make sure I’m staying out of the candy aisle.
Planning your road trip snacks ahead of time can be a great time and money saver on the road, plus they’re so much healthier than pit stop purchases. What are your road trip favorites?
